Helen Mirren Begins Reign In The Audience Tonight At The Gielgud Theatre

The hotly-anticipated premiere of Peter Morgan's The Audience starring Helen Mirren (pictured) starts previews tonight at the Gielgud Theatre.

Mirren reprises her Academy Award winning role of Elizabeth II, from Morgan’s 2006 film The Queen. She is joined by Haydn Gwynne as Margaret Thatcher, Robert Hardy as Winston Churchill, Paul Ritter as John Major, Michael Elwyn as Anthony Eden, Nathaniel Parker as Gordon Brown and Rufus Wright as David Cameron.

The Audience charts 60 years of Elizabeth II’s reign, during which she has met each of her twelve Prime Ministers in a weekly audience at Buckingham Palace.

Both parties have an unspoken agreement never to repeat what is said. The Audience breaks this contract of silence and imagines a series of pivotal meetings between the Prime Ministers, from Churchill to Cameron, and the Queen. Sometimes intimate, sometimes explosive, the Queen in turn can’t help but reveal her true self as she advises, consoles and, on occasion, teases.

The Audience is directed by Billy Elliot’s Stephen Daldry, and is produced by Matthew Byam Shaw for Playful Productions, Robert Fox and Andy Harries.
