Disney’s The Lion King, now in its thirteenth year in the West End, has reported record box office figures for the eighth year running. The show has defied the Olympics-related downturn that was predicted for the West End to report record sales of over £38 million.

EXCLUSIVE: No booking fee offer - Book tickets
If you think the classic Disney film would be hard to top, think again. Even the magic of the movie can’t beat the buzz of The Lion King as it roars into life on stage.
You'll be spellbound from the start, as a dazzling cast of colourfully costumed creatures troops right past your seat to the rousing strains of Elton John’s 'Circle of Life'.
It's the perfect introduction to a charming coming of age tale set in the cat-eat-cat world of the sweltering African Pride Lands.
What's the story?
The story of Simba the lion cub and the famous Lion King songs are familiar to millions. But if you've managed to miss out 'til now, here’s a quick catch-up for you:
Simba is looking forward to becoming king of the pride but his scheming Uncle Scar has other plans. When tragedy strikes, the lion cub runs away believing himself to be an outcast. With Scar and the hyenas in charge, the once-proud Pride Lands fall into misery and neglect.
Can Simba face down his past with the help of friends Timon and Pumbaa? And will he ever return to his rightful place as King of the Pride Lands and restore the Circle of Life?
Who's in it?
This majestically successful show has been a jewel in the crown of hundreds of performers' careers since it premiered in 1997 amid an avalanche of Olivier and Tony Awards.
The Lion King's riches are many and varied. But if its purely musical pleasures you're after, Grammy Legend Award-winner Sir Elton John's score and Tim Rice's lyrics will knock your paws off.
When the cast belts out classics like 'Hakuna Matata' and 'Can You Feel the Love Tonight?' you'll have to stop yourself from jumping out of your seat and joining them.
Who is The Lion King suitable for?
The story of Simba and his growing affection for childhood mate Nala may be the ‘mane’ attraction for some. But it's the show's astonishing puppetry that puts The Lion King in a league of its own.
Before you've stopped marveling at the sight of 18ft giraffes grazing in the aisles and graceful gazelles galloping by, an awesome wildebeest stampede appears before your very eyes.
It isn't just kids who'll be entranced. You may be planning your trip to The Lion King as a treat for young cubs, but it's you who'll come out raving about the incredible skill of its peerless puppeteers.

The Lion King reviews -

As soon as the opening chant of 'Circle of Life' rang out, I felt moved to tears. I was constantly in awe of the genius that went behind putting on the spectacle in front of me: the costumes, the graceful movements of the animals, and the staging of magnificent scenes you never thought could be converted from animation. It is a fantastic production that a lot of stage musicals should look up to!
The Lion King is the only musical I've seen more than once, which says a lot as I often have a very short attention span. What got me is that it has strong appeal for people of all ages, from young children through to grandparents. It's a classic story, but it's the music and costumes which really put the show in a league of its own. A thoroughly enjoyable evening, with something for the whole family.
West End shows don’t come much more spectacular than The Lion King. There’s a mix of puppetry, visual illusion and clever physical movement to suggest the different animals of the African Pridelands. And there’s that great music by Elton John and Hans Zimmer – loads of evocative percussion, haunting vocal chanting and hummable tunes. It’s the ideal theatre trip for adults as well as kids with many comic references and visual gags that keep both more than happy.
It is definitely one of the most visual and moving shows I've seen in the West End. The story and music are fantastic, but the production really comes to life with the staging and costumes - the masks and puppetry are sensational.

Great seats - SPECTACULAR SHOW!!!
This was an amazing show! The opening was excellent, and almost balletic. I loved the way they'd translated it from film to stage. There were a few changes - but nothing that took away from the production. Some of the ways that they changed it were really interesting and imaginative. I was worried about my seat - because I'd not been to the theatre in about 20 years - but I needn't have worried - the view was fantastic. I think it would be pretty much anywhere in the theatre. Finally all the actors/dancers were amazing, however in my opinion there were certain characters who were SUPERBLY cast. Soooo funny, my particular favourites were Timon, Pumba and Zazu. Anyway - It's amazing and I'd love to see it again.
Absolutely amazing! Would definitely recommend it for all ages. All the characters were played so well and the costumes were fantastic. We were sat in the middle of the stalls and they were worth every penny, it was brilliant. Loved every minute from the incredible opening scene to the end and would definitely go see it again.
Absolutely brilliant - out of all the shows available in London my 13 year old daughter and I who are on holiday from NZ decided to see this and we are so glad we did - we were not disappointed at all and will recommend it to others
A fantastic performance where the actors brings the audience into the fantasy universe of high-level play, impressive costumes and incredible songs.
Did You Know?
Gary Forbes, who plays Banzai the hyena, is the show’s longest-serving cast member, having been in the London ensemble since its West End opening in 1999. So it’s heartening to know that he’s always very aware people wait months to see the show and he strives to keep his performance fresh.
To give you some idea of what a colossal undertaking it was to bring this tremendous show to the stage, it took 17,000 hours to build all the puppets and masks involved, and 114 people are needed to prepare for each performance. But all this work has certainly been worth it because more than 50 million people in five continents have now seen the show.
And even top thesps are among its admirers. When Judi Dench attended the London premiere, she is said to have been moved to tears.
