What's it all about?

Winner of 4 2014 Olivier Awards including Best New Musical and Best Actor In A Musical.

The Book of Mormon is the biggest Broadway musical smash in recent memory, and now it's repeating its phenomenal success in London.

It's first months sold out faster than you can say 'Oh my God, they killed Kenny', and it's still red-hot. As such, we encourage you to book promptly if you fancy seeing it soon.

The show is the brainchild of South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, with Robert Lopez of Avenue Q. It won an incredible 9 Tony Awards after opening at New York’s Eugene O’Neill Theatre in March 2011.

Its soundtrack is the biggest selling cast album for forty years, reaching No. 3 on the U.S. Billboard chart and picking up the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre Album.

Sharply satirical, wildly irreverent, more than a bit rude but somehow sweet and endearing as well, The Book of Mormon gleefully skewers a truckload of sacred cows including organized religion, consumerism and the musical genre itself.

What's the story?

The Book of Mormon tells the story of two earnest young Mormon missionaries, Elder Kevin Price and Elder Arnold Cunningham.

Dispatched to a small town in Uganda to spread the word of the Latter Day Saints, they’re walloped by culture shock and end up in a showdown with a tyrannical warlord.

The duo are forced to confront their own beliefs before they can win the day, not to mention facing off with famine, poverty and AIDS. It may not sound like the stuff of uproarious comedy, but in the hands of spectacularly snarky South Parkers Parker and Stone, that’s exactly what it is.

Who's in it?

Book Of Mormon creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone are the genius creative duo behind the phenomenally successful, long-running animated TV comedy series South Park. Robert Lopez has previously enjoyed worldwide success as the progenitor of potty-mouthed puppet parody Avenue Q.

Gavin Creel and Jared Gertner play the lead roles of missionaries Elder Price and Elder Cunningham in The Book Of Mormon. The two men have previously played Price and Cunningham in the US tour of the show.

Creel is a fairly familiar face in the West End, having starred in Mary Poppins at the Prince Edward Theatre in 2006 and Hair at the Gielgud Theatre in 2010. His other theatre credits include La Cage Aux Folles and Thoroughly Modern Millie, both at Broadway’s Marquis Theatre.

Gertner’s onstage CV includes Ordinary Days with New York’s Roundabout Theatre Company and Band Geeks with the Goodspeed Musical Company. His TV roles include guest appearances in Ugly Betty and The Good Wife.

Who is The Book of Mormon suitable for?

Not recommended for children or the easily offended - this is adult stuff, for liberal-minded audiences. But if you love South Park's near-the-knuckle comedy and / or gloriously life-affirming, painfully funny musicals stuffed to the gills with take-home-tunes, then The Book Of Mormon is absolutely essential.

If you're a parent and you're OK with your kids watching South Park, then use your own judgement about letting them see this.

The Book of Mormon reviews - staff

I lost count of the number of times I was crying with laughter at something I knew shouldn't be laughing at really! If you’re not easily offended I cannot stress enough how much you should go and see The Book of Mormon. The script is sharp, the performance is tight from start to finish and the musical score is both hilarious and brilliant. Go...be converted!

As the saying goes, scratch a cynic and you’ll find a frustrated idealist underneath. Brilliant show, fantastic cast and crew, laugh-out-loud funny from start to finish but definitely not for the easily offended! We would go again and agaid if we could but will settle for listening to the soundtrack instead. Can't recommend this show highly enough.

Is anything more spine-tingling than hearing the audience murmur drop to a hush and seeing the house lights go down? Can anything beat the thrill of watching the actors emerge from the wings, ready to give the performance of a lifetime?

These images are from the current production of The Book of Mormon at the Prince of Wales Theatre. The Book of Mormon is the story of Elder Kevin Price and Elder Arnold Cunningham, missionaries who have been sent to Uganda to spread the Mormon way of life.

The show is the invention of South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone and first opened at New York’s Eugene O’Neill Theatre in March 2011 to great acclaim. The satirical musical wiped the floor at the Tony Awards, scooping nine gongs, and the show can also boast the biggest selling cast album in forty years.

Its transfer to the other side of the Atlantic broke sales records for the highest single day of sales in both West End and Broadway history. The show’s unanimous praise has quickly made it the hottest ticket in town.

Whether you’ve already booked your seats for The Book of Mormon through us or you’re still making up your mind, we hope this gallery gives you a feeling for the essence of the show. We know where we’d like to be next time the curtain goes up at Prince of Wales Theatre. Perhaps we’ll see you there.

Did You Know?

The Book of Mormon masterminds Trey Parker and Matt Stone are the genius creative duo behind the phenomenally successful, long-running animated TV comedy series South Park.

But as well as the edgy, Colorado-set cartoon show, they've built up an impressive, idiosyncratic body of work at the movies with off-beat comedies including BASEketball, Team America - World Police, Cannibal: The Musical and Orgazmo.

The latter in particular is of interest to those with half an eye on The Book Of Mormon. Its protagonist Joe Young (played by Parker) is a naive Mormon who's unwittingly roped into the adult movie business.

This 1997 movie is the most visible precursor to the current musical, but it's far from the only instance in Parker & Stone's canon involving the Church of the Latter Day Saints getting ribbed; South Park is full of them.

How did P & S come to be so fascinated by Mormonism? Simply because they both grew up in Northwest Colorado, they say, which is near the Utah border and thus has a significant Mormon population.
