What's it all about?

What chance does Lorna have of a quiet weekend when both daughters and her granddaughter descend on her with their own problems?

In this touching and hilarious family encounter, laughter and Northern grit can get her only so far - she's spent three decades working for everyone else through the miners' strikes, local milk schemes and library closures and tomorrow she's to have a community centre named after her - but here's her granddaughter thinking her new boob job is more important!

Audiences are laughing and crying along as a BAFTA, impending divorce, redundancy and a very upmarket caravanette give Lorna and her feisty daughters the chance to reconsider both the past and the future - for everyone.

What's a woman to do? Accept everything that's thrown at her, or become a fully paid-up member of the 'awkward squad'?

BAFTA-winning Emmerdale writer Karin Young's play is an uplifting, heartfelt comedy, taking a sideways look at the challenges faced by modern women of all ages.

Who's in it?

Starring Charlie Hardwick (Val in ITV's Emmerdale), Barbara Marten (Casualty, Coronation Street, Brookside), Libby Davison (The Bill, Hollyoaks) and Lisa McGrillis (Shakespeare's Globe & The Pitmen Painters).

Customer Reviews

-Joan

I did not know what to expect the last time I went to a play was over 30 years ago, but I was pleasantly surprised the play was excellent the story moving and very funny well round characters. I also enjoyed the interesting way the play was staged excellent use of back projections and text/emails a triumph a play I could recommend to anyone.

-Paul

-Cheryl

we really enjoyed the awkward squad it was very funny but also very real. the cast were excellent and really liked the theatre it was nice and cosy.

-Hajra

This play was great, it transported us back to the early eighties and the Miners Strike while being bang up to date with the impacts of the cruel "death by a thousand cuts" that is our state right now. The politics was spot on capturing the lives of women across three generations with strong characters and punchy funny lines. The audience was appreciative but the theatre should have been packed and then we would have had a really good laugh with these wonderful actresses
