What's it all about?

South London venue to stage a site-specific revival of the Olivier Award winning Boy George musical.

Taboo will once again be directed by co-creator, Christopher Renshaw and the project is also actively supported by the talents of many of the original creative team including writer Mark Davies Markham and composer/lyricist and star of the original run, Boy George.

A musical portrait of a brief but remarkable era, 1980s London. These gloriously self-indulgent years, played out against a backdrop of mass unemployment and social upheaval, sparked a rebellion among young people which ultimately found its expression in outrageous fashions and a decadent nightlife. These were the "New Romantics" - leaders of a phenomenon which left a lasting influence on both the face and fate of pop, fashion and social culture.

What's the story?

Taboo is a story between a young girl and boy swept up in this exciting artistic climate and also focuses on two other young men - Leigh Bowery, a brilliant, anarchic performance artist and designer, and George O'Dowd, a young, rough-edged boy who arrives in London and, once part of the Eighties club world, becomes the surprising crossover star of the scene, Boy George. From squat to superstardom, from rock to rock bottom, both mens' stories are played out against the fantastic background of Taboo, the nightclub that came to symbolise the excess and decadence of 1980s London and subsequently defined a generation.

Taboo is full of laughs, tears and amazing performances by a hugely talented cast. Brilliantly written, brilliant score. All in all a fabulous night out. Will be going again and again and again. Word of warning the show closes 31st March. Don't miss it!

Absolutely stunning show - great acting, singing, looking and a meaningful story line. The action happens all around you, and it's in a small space with a large cast and live band so it's impossible not to get carried along. And ok, a few people get picked on a bit - but in a friendly enough way. And what's wrong with having someone dancing on your table, they do give you a moment to clear your glasses? If you can get to see it, go for it! A very mixed audience in all respects so you'll feel at ease to sit back and just enjoy. Actually, sitting back isn't an option as you need to look behind and to the sides. Oh and the bar is part of the set, so top up before and in the interval. The rest of the time the bar is part of the action. But words can't do it all justice. You have to be there!

Sam Buttery, previously best known as a contestant on BBC 1 talent show The Voice, will play flamboyant Australian club owner Leigh Bowery in the upcoming London revival of Boy George’s musical Taboo. The play will run at the Brixton Club House from 6 September to 23 December. It’s a notable step up for talented twenty-year-old Buttery, who was, endearingly, overwhelmed when he met his hero Tom Jones on The Voice.
