Welcome to the world of Far Far Away – a land of princesses in towers, terrifying dragons and a handsome… oh no, wrong story. If you’ve seen the films, you’ll know that Shrek, the grouchy green ogre, is no Prince Charming. He is, however, a lot more fun.
With hit song 'I’m a Believer' now part of the show, plenty of tongue-in-cheek humour and appearances from a whole host of fairytale faithfuls — from the Three Blind Mice to Gingy the Gingerbread Man — you’re in for a joyous take on the world of Once Upon a Time at Shrek The Musical.
What's the story?
You get a bit more of the back story in this spectacular stage version, but Shrek is still the same old flatulent and friendless ogre who just wants to be left alone to live grumpily ever after. So when fairytale folk start flooding into his beloved swamp, on the run from the vertically challenged Lord Farquaad, something must be done.
Join Shrek as he sets out to confront this pipsqueak pest, meeting the loveably irritating Donkey along the way and finding himself on a quest to rescue a princess with a surprising secret.
Who's in it?
Despite having to compete with some extraordinary sounds from Shrek’s nether regions, this show managed to bag a Grammy nomination for its score. And by the end you’ll be belting (or should that be belching?) out Neil Diamond's classic with the best of them.
You’ll be in good company because among the cast are Dean Chisnall (Love Never Dies), playing the gentle green giant, comedian Richard Blackwood as his 'noble steed' and Carley Stenson (Legally Blonde) as the not-so-lovely Princess Fiona.
But it's Neil McDermott's (EastEnders) dastardly Lord Farquaad who runs off with the show – just as fast as his little legs will carry him.
Who is Shrek The Musical suitable for?
Your kids will be delighted by the beautiful storybook set, Tony Award-winning costumes, tap-dancing rats and, at one point, even a fire-breathing dragon swooping overhead – courtesy of the puppeteers behind War Horse.
But a bit like The Simpsons, Shrek The Musical is universal in its appeal. Yes, there’s a steady stream of toilet humour for the kids. But if you feel a bit too old for all that, you’ll love the in-jokes, double entendres and smart references to pop culture.

Did You Know?
The original movie was inspired by a cartoon from New Yorker illustrator William Steig, who then turned his strip into a children’s book with a much meaner hero than the films. Perhaps that’s because he stuck closer to the origins of the word Shrek, which means ‘monster’ in Yiddish, while in German ‘schreck’ means ‘fright’.
Former leading lady Amanda Holden was pretty philosophical about having to bulk up and adopt some of Princess Fiona’s less appealing habits. “I’m wearing a prosthetic nose and ears, I’m going to be painted green and I will be farting at will. To be honest, that’s how I look most Sundays after a big night out.”
