What's it all about?

Frederick Ashton's sunny story of young love is one of the most delightful and popular works in the Royal Ballet repertory. Full of charm, the story follows the youthful affections of Lise and Colas as they arrange their secret assignations right under the nose of Lise's protective mother, Widow Simone.

Ashton's choreography brings alive this storybook village, from its dancing hens through to the merrymaking locals round the maypole. There are joyous ensembles, characterful solos - Widow Simone's clog dance is always a favourite - and romantic pas de deux of the most engaging kind.

The wonderfully colourful sets and costumes and the tuneful music by Hérold  conducted by the Royal Ballet's Music Director Barry Wordsworth adds to a treat that will appeal to all ages and all enthusiasts for the delights of dance.

Who's in it?

Featuring some of the Royal Ballet's finest international talent, La Fille mal gardée takes on exquisite dancers with years of experience performing around the world. These include Yuhui Choe, Laura Morera, Alina Cojocaru, Roberta Marquez, Marianela Nuñez, Steven McRae and more.

Suitable for

La Fille mal gardée is a romantic, light-hearted ballet with choreographer inspired by English rural life, so anyone looking for beautiful dancing from the Royal Ballet but a happier ending than, say, Romeo and Juliet, will find this in La Fille mal gardée.

What's the story?

The belle of the village, Lise, has fallen for farmhand Colas - but her mother Widow Simone disapproves and wants to marry her off to the rich Alain instead. As the Widow conspires to get her daughter married into a well-to-do family, Lise and Colas have other plans - but will they be happily ever after? And what if Alain finds out?
