What's it all about?

Laurent Pelly's funny and charming interpretation of La Fille du régiment has fast become one of the most popular of all Royal Opera productions, repeating its success worldwide. It was the hottest ticket in town when it was first staged in 2007, and each return has proved it one of the most witty, stylish and fun events around.

Donizetti's comic masterpiece is full of great music, from the touching and sincere to the comic and quirky. Memorable and melodic, the score is packed with dazzling coloratura, beautiful solos and great choruses.

The story has all the elements of comic coincidence and timely discovery as our tomboy heroine is forced into more ladylike circles suitable to her aristocratic birth - but she proves far too spirited to give in to any wishes but those of her own heart.

Who's in it?

For this return, the fabulous voices of Patrizia Ciofi and Colin Lee hit the high notes and tug at the heart strings, with Yves Abel conducting. Also, look out for a cheeky cameo by Ann Widdecombe in her operatic debut (albeit in a non-singing part).

Suitable for

This is perfect fare for anyone who enjoys great singing of Italian showpieces, or loves to be swept up by a laugh-out-loud world of comic inspiration - pure pleasure with The Royal Opera.

What's the story?

Marie was raised by troops, who discovered her abandoned as a baby on a battlefield. She has fallen for a partisan enlisting in the army, but when her long-lost aunt discovers her and her boyish ways, she drags her back to high society, wishing to refine her manners in true Pygmalion fashion and marry her off to a wealthy aristocrat. But Marie and her adopted regiment family have other plans...
