What's it all about?

The tale of Jesus Christ’s betrayal by Judas Iscariot and what followed it is one of the world’s great stories. Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s celebrated rock opera treats it as just that – a great story – while handling it with respect.

A big, bold show, Jesus Christ Superstar’s been a titan of musical theatre since its creation in 1971. This grand-scale new production will both move you deeply and have you leaping out of your seat with joy as you follow the character of Jesus on a musical journey through his last seven days.

Mixing full-on rock with gospel and pop, the score features some of Rice and Lloyd Webber’s best-ever songs, including I Don’t Know How To Love Him and Superstar.

What's the story?

Loosely based on the Gospels, Jesus Christ Superstar is both tender and thrilling in its musical retelling of the last seven days of Christ’s life.

Apostle Judas Iscariot becomes concerned about Jesus’ growing reputation as a heaven-sent King and warns Jesus not to risk the anger of the Roman Empire. When Jesus doesn’t heed him, a chain of events is sent in motion that leads Jesus to his ultimate fate at the hands of Pontius Pilate and the evil King Herod.

Who's in it?

A Superstar show deserves a superstar cast, and this one’s got it. First up is Aussie comic and Olivier Award-winning Matilda composer Tim Minchin, realising his lifelong ambition to play Judas on stage.

Minchin’s joined by Olivier nominee (and one of the world’s biggest pop stars of the last 20 years) ex-Spice Girl Mel C as Mary Magdalene. Finally, get ready to boo and hiss horrid King Herod, brought to life by loveable rogue Chris Moyles.

Who is Jesus Christ Superstar: Manchester suitable for?

Whoever you are, whatever your age, you’ll be blown away by the spectacle, the stars, the story, the songs – and the rock. With staging and lighting design by veterans of Pink Floyd and Rolling Stones tours, expect a thrilling extravaganza performed by a cast with real passion for the show.
