What's it all about?

Don't let the eyebrow-raising title put you off. Sarah Ruhl's In The Next Room or The Vibrator Play is a brilliantly smart and funny comedy for grown-ups that turns the spotlight on a rarely examined but crucial period in the history of psychology and women's social and sexual emancipation.

In an age when anyone can wander into a high street store and buy a vibrator with as little fuss as buying a pint of milk, In The Next Room offers a witty and instructive look back to the Victorian origins of this now ubiquitous device, when doctors used it to bring women to orgasm as a supposed treatment for 'hysteria'.

Exploring themes including ignorance of female sexual desire, motherhood and breastfeeding and jealousy, the play was nominated for three 2010 Tony Awards and was a Finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

The Times called it "Electrifying ★★★★★" and, because we can't resist a cheesy pun either, we concur: it'll give you quite a buzz.

What's the story?

Late 19th Century New York State - a time of great innovation and social change.

While enthusiasm has been growing among the well-to-do for the recently invented electric light bulb, Doctor Givings has been developing a machine designed to stimulate the female reproductive organs with vibrations. Its purpose: to cure women of the various mental illnesses thought to originate in the womb and collectively described as 'hysteria'.

At the same time, Sabrina Daldry and Doctor Givings' wife Catherine are sexually frustrated with their husbands, whose bedroom methods they endure but don't enjoy.

Both women take to the good Doctor's new machine with immediate and unbridled enthusiasm. But while Mrs. Daldry is happy to continue 'treatments' while suffering lifeless trysts with her husband, Mrs Givings wants more...

In The Next Room stars Madeline Appiah as Elizabeth, Edward Bennett as Leo Irving, Natalie Casey as Catherine Givings, Jason Hughes as Dr Givings, Flora Montgomery as Sabrina Daldry, Owen Oakeshott as Mr Daldry and Sarah Woodward as Annie.
