Billy Elliot the Musical, which last week welcomed its landmark four-millionth visitor at London’s Victoria Palace Theatre is getting a cast shake-up on 13 May. Anna Jane Casey (pictured) will step into the role of Billy’s dance teacher Mrs. Wilkinson, Howard Crossley will take over as Billy’s dad George, Kevin Wathen will play Billy’s brother Tony and Alexander Loxton will appear as Older Billy.

What's the story?
Billy Elliot the Musical is a classic tale of triumph over adversity you'll never forget.
Little Billy Elliot lives with his Dad, Brother and Gran in a mining town in the north of England. It’s the 1980s, Maggie Thatcher is in power and times are tough. But Billy has a talent that could free him from his life of struggle and take him all the way to the top. To realise his dream he'll have to overcome financial hardship, win over the no-nonsense Northerners of his home town and convince the Royal Ballet School that he’s got what it takes.
You’ll live this journey with him, marvelling at his growing talent in the beautifully choreographed dance scenes, laughing along at the lighter moments and rooting for him as he aims for the top.
Who's in it?
You'll instantly recognise Tchaikovsky's music from Swan Lake in the amazing aerial sequence featuring young Billy Elliot dancing with his older self. But with Elton John providing the rest of the score you'll discover a clutch of brilliant modern tunes too, including the brilliantly catchy 'Solidarity' and tongue-in-cheek 'Merry Christmas, Maggie Thatcher'.
Most impressive among a uniformly great cast are, of course, the incredibly talented youngsters who play Billy Elliot. They're ably assisted by Gillian Bevan (Teachers, Holby City), gamely stepping into Julie Walters’ dance shoes as Billy’s inspirational teacher, and Deka Walmsley (The Pitmen Painters), who plays his Dad.
Who is Billy Elliot suitable for?
A tender tale of trial and redemption set against a gritty Northern backdrop, if movies like Brassed Off and The Full Monty were up your cobbled street, then tickets for Billy Elliot are - well - just the ticket. The show's packed with earthy humour and exhilarating music. It carries the uplifting message that anything’s possible so long as you stay true to yourself.
The occasional colourful language used by these authentic northern characters may be a bit too fruity for younger people. Otherwise, it's hard to think who wouldn't instantly warm to this fabulous feel-good musical.

I liked this show so much more than I thought I would. The acting was superb, the Elton-John-penned songs were catchy and moved the story along and the choreography was so tight and simply beautiful, especially the ballet sequences. Make sure you stay until the very end for the miner/ballerina dance encore! There is a wonderful subplot too with Billy's best friend Michael which has a great message. There’s quite a bit of swearing not suitable for young children or the sensitive, but it’s still great for teenagers and is very accessible. Number one tip: read up a little on the mining strikes beforehand if you don't know much about them.

I saw this not long after it first opened, and had forgotten how good it was. The whole cast were brilliant, as were the sets and the music - a really good evening for people of all ages. Don't miss it!

The whole show was enjoyable from beginning to end. It had comical moments and yet some hard hitting emotional scenes. The way the set was designed and moved was excellent, with constant changes and surprises. The songs added to the already wonderful story, but were not every two seconds so we got some good acting and dialogue in.

Simply Stunning! At times i had a lump in my throat; then roaring with laughter. As an Ex Yorkshire miner who was caught up in the termoil created by that witch Thatcher it was at times very moving. An excellent cast who creted a fantastic atmoshpere and delivered a fantastic musical. Thanks!

When Elton John happened to attend the first public screening of the film at Cannes, he was reduced to tears and immediately contacted director Stephen Daldry (The Hours) about turning it into a musical.
At first, writer Lee Hall (Steven Spielberg’s War Horse) remembers thinking this was “the worst idea I’d ever heard”. But later, it became a career highlight: “I would write the lyrics and fax them to Atlanta, then 12 hours later Elton would call and sing the song down the phone. It was mad.”
