What's it all about?

Beautiful is the Tony Award-winning smash-hit Broadway musical that tells the true story of Carole King’s journey from schoolgirl to superstar. It traces her relationship with her husband and song-writing partner Gerry Goffin, their close friendship and playful rivalry with fellow song-writing duo Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, and her remarkable rise to stardom.

Beautifully staged, the show features a uniformly excellent cast of actor / singers who rise to the challenge of executing King’s timelessly brilliant songs just as well as their Sixties forebears did. If you're over 45 you’ll recognise every single song instantly, and if you aren’t, get ready to enter an Aladdin’s cave of glittering musical jewels.

It’s a particular pleasure to watch the songs develop from early piano or guitar demos to fully realised pop performances on stage. Beautiful respects the songwriting process and reveals it magically, in a moving, entertaining artist biography that offers real depth and insight into the life of one of modern music’s most talented and influential figures.

We recommend patrons arrive at least 15mins in advance of the show start time.

Security checks will be carried  out upon arrival at the theatre, please be aware that your bags will need to be checked before being seated.

What's the story?

Beautiful opens with Carole King playing a sold-out Carnegie Hall concert in the early Seventies, then flashes back to her days as a gifted college freshman in Brooklyn.

Her careworn mother wants her to be a teacher but Carole has other plans. She sells her first song to upcoming pop mogul Don Kirshner and becomes a regular feature at his Aldon Music studio, one of the crucial centres of the unfolding Sixties pop business. There she meets Gerry Goffin, who becomes her husband and songwriting partner.

Goffin and King quickly establish themselves as a red-hot team, scoring huge hits with Will You Love Me Tomorrow, The Loco-Motion and many more. But their youth and success take a toll on their marriage, leaving Carole with two daughters, a new life in the hip songwriters' enclave of Laurel Canyon, and a single-minded determination to prove herself as a solo performer with her album, Tapestry.

Who's in it?

Beautiful stars Cassidy Janson as Carole King. Singer / actress Janson's other theatre credits include Dessa Rose at Trafalga Studios, Tick Tick Boom at Menier Chocolate Factory, Blood Wedding at Courtyard Theatre, Rooms: A Rock Romance at Finborough Theatre, Lend Me a Tenor at Gielgud Theatre, and was part of the original Wicked cast at the Apollo Victoria Theatre. Her screen credits include Casualty and The Hike.

She is joined in the cast by Alan Morrissey as Gerry Goffin, Lorna Want as Cynthia Weil, Diane Keen as King’s mother Genie Klein, and Gary Trainor as Don Kirshner.

Who is Beautiful - The Carole King Musical suitable for?

If Jersey Boys and Sunny Afternoon were up your Tin Pan Alley, then you won’t think twice about grabbing a seat for Beautiful.

Beautiful is a great story well told, but even if it wasn’t, superb performances of songs including Will You Love Me Tomorrow, The Locomotion, Pleasant Valley Sunday, You’ve Got A Friend, Natural Woman, You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling and It Might As Well Rain Until September alone are worth the price of a Beautiful ticket.

Did You Know?

If it weren't for Goffin and King, we might never have had The Beatles - or at least, not as we know them.

Having spent the years from 1956 onward absorbing and emulating the sounds of early rock and roll, including Elvis, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly and the Everly Brothers, John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison (Ringo hadn't joined yet) fell instantly in love with the sophisticated 'girl group' sound that began filtering through to the UK from New York in 1960.

The Shirelles, whose timeless version of Will You Love Me Tomorrow launched their own career and that of its writers Gerry Goffin and Carole King, became a musical model for the Beatles, deeply influencing the moptops' three-part harmony and call-and-response vocal approach. George Harrison went as far as describing The Beatles as 'a sort-of male Shirelles'.

The songwriting partnership of Lennon-McCartney focused itself intently not just on the Shirelles' records, but on the methods of the songsmiths behind them - Goffin and King - and consciously aimed at becoming Carole and Gerry's British counterparts. The Beatles paid explicit homage to Goffin and King on their debut album 'Please Please Me', which features a cover version of G & K's Chains, which had previously been a hit for girl group The Cookies.
