What's it all about?
If you like Lee Evans, you'll love him as dimwitted do-badder Darnley Packer in Barking in Essex, a criminally funny new play by Clive Exton, the acclaimed writer of 10 Rillington Place and Jeeves and Wooster.
Evans is on top form as Darnley, who, more hindered than helped by his scheming other half Chrissie, played by Keeley Hawes, and his domineering mother Emmie, played by Shiela Hancock, burns out every last watt of his not-very-considerable brainpower in an attempt to avoid the wrath of his big-time criminal brother, whose money the trio have pinched.
It's riotous, raucous stuff. Not for the easily offended, but sharp as a tack and very, very funny.
NOTE: Keeley Hawes will not be performing between 17 December 2013 and 4 January 2014
What's the story?
Freedom finally beckons for Algie Packer, Essex's most notorious gangster. He's done seven years inside and now he's coming home to collect his booty - £3,672,000 in untraceable notes. But there's something Algie's family have forgotten to mention...
Meet The Packers, Essex's lovable, but most dysfunctional family. Darnley, the village idiot of the criminal underworld, and Emmie, his mother - the family's Rottweiler with a hairdo. Witness the Packers as they desperately try to cover their tracks before Algie arrives to collect what is rightfully his.
Who's in it?
Lee Evans (The Producers, Endgame, The Dumb Waiter) is hapless, dim witted Darnley, the village idiot of the criminal underworld.
Sheila Hancock (Sister Act, The Last of the Duchess, Cabaret) is Emmie, his mother, and Keeley Hawes (Ashes to Ashes) is his devious wife Chrissie.
