What's it all about?
If you don't know the name Zach Braff, you soon will. He’s the multi-talented and award-winning star of US sitcom Scrubs, who already has a much-lauded indie film (Garden State) under his belt and now presents his first play.
And what a play. The New York Times described it as 'sensationally funny' and we’re sure you’ll think so too, for just as the jokes keep coming in Scrubs so here the funnies come thick and fast, starting with an unbeatable sight gag involving a hanging and a cigarette.
With only a limited 10-week run, All New People is one seriously funny drama that you really don’t want to miss.
Who's in it?
When All New People debuted in New York, Justin Bartha from hit film The Hangover played the lead. But here in the UK you will be treated to the man himself - writer and Scrubs star Zach Braff - as he fulfills a lifelong dream to take to the West End stage.
Joining Braff are Eve Myles of Torchwood fame, and Susannah Fielding who has been in numerous National Theatre productions.
Suitable for
While anyone who's a Scrubs fan will jump at the chance to see 'JD' in the flesh, you don’t have to have seen the show to have a great night out with this weird and wonderful gang.
If you liked the darker humour of Avenue Q you’re sure to like this, as will anyone who enjoys the whip-smart dramas of Neil LaBute or who saw the Evening Standard-nominated Becky Shaw at the Almeida Theatre last year.
But even if plays aren’t usually your thing, this one will be. You’ll be gripped as much by its cameo-filled film interludes as its quick-fire comedy.
What's the story?
A wintry setting and a suicidal lead may not sound like the stuff of comedy gold, but that’s exactly what the one-time leading man of Scrubs has created here.
Feeling washed up staying at a friend's uber-trendy Long Island Beach house, 30-something Charlie (Zach Braff) is attempting to say 'Goodbye, cruel world' when a bizarre bunch of misfits turn up and rally round to prevent his swift sayonara.
As Charlie struggles to get rid of the oddball threesome - who include a high-class hooker, a motormouth British estate agent and a dope-dealing fire chief - could it be that they are just what he needs to get back on track and even find love?
Staff Reviews
The stage was nicely decorated; the actors were very funny and gave a good performance. It's great for a young group of friends to see together and have a laugh.
Great writing from Zach Braff proving he is much more than just a sitcom actor. Also played a character very different from JD in Scrubs – showing his range as a comedic actor. (Don't go if you are offended by bad language, sexual references or drugs though.) Fantastic.
What the critics say
Sensationally funny! The jokes are delivered with the precision of ace dart throwers in this slick and lively comedy
All New People is a hipper, edgier take on the bantering comedies that were once the domain of playwrights like Neil Simon
Braff is an immensely likeable and alert comic performer in his goofy reactions and smart silver suit, and Eve Myles and Susannah Fielding are cheerfully inventive throughout
Not only is it very well written and funny...but also it has a depth and an intelligence
A smart, sharp New York hit which richly deserves to prosper here
Customer Reviews
Zach Braff is sooooo talented! Always enjoyed his work as a actor, but it wasn't until watching the movie Garden State that I truly came to appreciate how intelligent, diverse and creative he truly is. With this play, he has clinched his right and spot as one of the most talented men in the entertainment and arts industry. All New People is smart, funny, thought-provoking and not to be missed. Zach, if you just happen to read this, please, please, please keep doing what you are doing. Will restlessly await your next masterpiece.
Amazing!!!!
It was fantastic! Zack Braff has outdone himself with this play. It was dark it was funny and had a few witty jokes, some more vulgar jokes, but they all worked. It had a great plot with a strong message that impacted me in this dark time in my life. Thank you to Zack, a great play and a great cast.
It was brilliant. Braff was amazing, as was Myles.
Really enjoyed the show, funny, thought provoking and all really well acted. Very unusual to see something like this. Was happy to have Hi 5'd Zach at the end when he came out to see everyone
Great witty play! It was funny, smart, so not PC and well acted. If you're a Scrubs fan, Zack Braff won't disappoint you. The rest of the cast was also hilarious. It's a dramatic comedy with a touch of humanity and optimism. It does not matter if you’re entering the theatre depressed or happy, everyone will leave with hope and a smile on their face. Trust me; you're in for a great night!
