What's it all about?
Celebrated choreographer and performer Akram Khan brings his acclaimed show Desh back to London’s Sadler’s Wells.
Desh made its world premiere in 2011 to unanimous critical praise and repeated its success at Sadler’s Wells in 2012. Such is the degree of popular demand for this remarkable performance that it’s returning to London’s foremost venue of international dance for a third go-round in 2013.
Khan’s most personal work to date, Desh is a full length contemporary solo in which Khan moves his stories between Britain and Bangladesh, weaving threads of memory, experience and myth into a surreal world. Intimate and yet epic, it been declared ‘a masterpiece’ by The Observer and won the Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production.
What's the story?
Born in London, dancer and choreographer Akram Khan holds a great attachment to his homeland, Bangladesh. Desh, which means ‘homeland’ in Bengali, is a full-length performance inspired by the artist’s motherland.
After high-profile collaborations with artists including Sylvie Guillem, Anish Kapoor and Antony Gormley, Desh transports Khan to a deeply personal setting, as he seeks to reconnect with his cultural roots.
Reflecting on life in Bangladesh, Khan portrays several characters through his body and voice. He explores the idea of transformation of body, land, identity and memory and examines the contradictions of his own British-Asian identity.

The Akram Khan Company is made up of dancers, musicians, technicians, composers, designers, artists and people from other cretive disciplines. The dancers are world-class, and have converged on the company from far and wide – Australia, China, South Africa, Slovakia, India and Egypt.
