Tony Award nominee Gavin Lee will take over from Tom Chambers in the role of Jerry Travers in Top Hat at the Aldwych Theatre from 5 February 2013. Lee will star opposite Charlotte Gooch, stepping into the outgoing Summer Strallen’s shoes as Dale Tremont from 27 November.
Lee is currently starring on Broadway as Bert in Mary Poppins, the role which he originated in the West End in 2004. His other musical theatre credits include Crazy For You at the Prince Edward Theatre, Peggy Sue Got Married at the Shaftesbury Theatre, DuBarry Was A Lady at Her Majesty’s Theatre and Oklahoma at the National Theatre.
Gooch is currently playing the role of Penny in the national tour of Dirty Dancing, a role she originated in the German production in Berlin. Her other theatre credits include the roles of Tantomile and Bombalurina in the German production of Cats.
Based on the classic Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers movie musical, Top Hat tells the story of American tap dancer Jerry Travers, who comes to London to star in his first West End show and falls head-over-heels for the irresistible Dale Tremont.
Top Hat was adapted for the stage by Matthew White and Howard Jacques. It includes many of Irving Berlin’s classic songs form the original film including Cheek to Cheek and the title song, plus ten more numbers from Berlin’s catalogue that have been hand-picked for inclusion in the show.
