Having been on the cards for some time, Matilda the Musical has now officially announced its transfer to the Broadway stage. The New York production of the show is scheduled to begin previews on 4 March 2013 at the Schubert Theatre, with its official opening set for 11 April.
Created by The Royal Shakespeare Company, Matilda premiered in Stratford-upon-Avon in November 2010, where it ran until January 2011 before transferring to the West End’s Cambridge Theatre in November 2011.
The show has been a major critical success and audience favourite, sweeping up seven Olivier awards earlier this year, including Best New Musical.
Adapted from Roald Dahl's 1988 novel, Matilda tells the story of a little girl with extraordinary powers. The show’s book is by Dennis Kelly, music and lyrics are by Tim Minchin, and it’s directed by Matthew Warchus.
The RSC are teaming up for the Broadway production with producing office The Dodgers, the group responsible for multi-award winning musical Jersey Boys.
Casting for the Broadway transfer will be announced shortly.
